Red Cattura Coffee Tree

Red Caturra is a natural dwarf mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety, prized for its high cup quality and suitability for smaller farms.

  • Origin: Discovered in Minas Gerais, Brazil in the 1930s; later widely cultivated in Colombia and Latin America.
  • Chill Hours: Coffee trees do not require chill hours; they thrive in consistently warm, tropical climates.
  • Altitude: Grows best at 1,000–1,800 meters (3,300–5,900 ft) above sea level; higher altitudes contribute to better flavor complexity.
  • Pollination: Primarily self-pollinating, but insect activity (e.g. bees) can enhance yield and quality.
  • Tree Size: Naturally compact and short, making it easier to harvest and maintain; well-suited for high-density planting.
  • Harvest Time: Usually harvested once annually; timing depends on region, typically October to March in the Northern Hemisphere and April to August in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Usage of Fruits: Fruits (coffee cherries) are harvested for processing into specialty coffee beans via washed, honey, or natural methods.
  • Fruits and Flavor: Red cherries ripen with bright skin and yield beans with balanced acidity, medium to full body, and flavor notes often including red fruits, chocolate, and floral tones.
