Red Bartlett Pear Tree

The Red Bartlett pear tree is a vibrant, red-skinned variant of the classic Bartlett pear, prized for its juicy, sweet fruit and ornamental beauty.

  • Origin: Discovered as a natural mutation of the Yellow Bartlett in the early 1940s in Washington, USA.
  • Chill Hours: Requires approximately 600–800 chill hours (hours below 45°F / 7°C).
  • Altitude: Grows well up to 1,800 meters (6,000 feet) in temperate climates; prefers moderate elevations with well-drained soil.
  • Pollination: Partially self-fertile, but better yields with cross-pollination. Good pollinizers include Yellow Bartlett, Bosc, or D’Anjou.
  • Tree Size: Typically a medium-sized tree, growing 15–20 feet tall with a similar spread when mature.
  • Harvest Time: Harvested in late summer to early fall, generally August to September, depending on climate and location.
  • Usage of Fruits: Excellent for fresh eating, canning, baking, salads, and desserts. The red skin adds visual appeal to dishes and fruit platters.
  • Fruits and Flavor: Large, bell-shaped fruits with smooth, bright red skin. Flesh is creamy white, juicy, and very sweet with a buttery texture and classic pear aroma. Fruit turns slightly softer and sweeter as it ripens off the tree.
