Pettingill Apple Tree

The Pettingill apple tree is a unique, low-chill variety ideal for warmer climates, known for its sweet-tart fruits and excellent adaptability.

  • Origin: Discovered as a chance seedling in Southern California in the 1940s.
  • Chill Hours: Approximately 300–400 chill hours, making it well-suited for mild-winter regions.
  • Altitude: Performs best at low to mid elevations (generally below 1,500 meters), especially in Mediterranean or subtropical climates.
  • Pollination: Partially self-fruitful, but yields improve with a compatible pollinator (e.g., Anna, Dorsett Golden, or Ein Shemer).
  • Tree Size: Typically a medium to large tree, reaching 12–20 feet in height and spread if unpruned; can be maintained smaller with pruning.
  • Harvest Time: Late fall — usually from October to November, depending on local climate.
  • Usage of Fruits: Excellent for fresh eating, cooking, baking, sauces, and cider.
  • Fruits and Flavor: Medium to large, round apples with red and green skin. Flesh is crisp and juicy, with a balanced sweet-tart flavor, often compared to McIntosh or Jonathan apples.
