Kinnow Mandarin Tree

The Kinnow mandarin is a high-yield, hybrid citrus tree known for its juicy, sweet-tart fruit and adaptability to subtropical climates.

  • Origin: Developed in 1935 by Dr. H.B. Frost at the University of California, Riverside; a hybrid of ‘King’ (Citrus nobilis) and ‘Willow Leaf’ (Citrus deliciosa).
  • Chill Hours: Requires very low chill hours; typically less than 100, making it ideal for warm climates.
  • Altitude: Grows well from sea level up to about 1,500 meters (approx. 5,000 feet); thrives particularly in arid to semi-arid regions.
  • Pollination: Self-pollinating, but cross-pollination can increase seediness. Some commercial growers use netting or isolation to control seed content.
  • Tree Size: Medium to large tree, typically reaching 10–15 feet (3–4.5 meters) in height; dense canopy with upright growth.
  • Harvest Time: Generally harvested from December to March, depending on climate and elevation.
  • Usage of Fruits: Consumed fresh, juiced, or canned; widely used in juice production due to high juice content and robust flavor.
  • Fruits and Flavor: Medium to large-sized fruits with deep orange rind, easy to peel; juicy, sweet-tart flavor with a bright citrus aroma; may contain several seeds unless seedless varieties are selected.
